Post Office: Take cash and cards on holiday

Taking a combination of cash and credit cards to pay with when on holiday is the best option, according to the Post Office.

Sarah Munro, head of Post Office Travel Services, recommended that tourists take a mixture of currency and plastic to cover them for all eventualities.

"It is important to carry some cash to pay for taxis and drinks and in many destinations it will be needed to buy goods," Ms Monro said.

Consumers who are concerned about the security risk of taking large sums of cash away with them may wish to consider using a pre-paid card, she suggested, which is loaded up with the currency of the country the holidaymaker is visiting before they leave.

Santander had previously commented that the number of people who chose to take just cash with them on holiday was 52 per cent, with just five per cent now opting to pay using travellers cheques.
