High energy bills predicted this month

Bill payers could face large energy bills following the cold snap experienced last month, moneysupermarket.com has warned.

Research by the price comparison site found that a standard tariff winter energy bill is set to increase by 20 per cent this year, which works out at around £104 per household.

This figure is an increase on earlier predictions made by the price comparison site that bills could increase by ten per cent due to the cold weather, with most homes using 41 per cent of their yearly energy bill between November and February.

It is expected that for those who pay their bill quarterly may soon be receiving one of the largest they have ever had and could even experience a record high, as bills are estimated to have more than doubled since 2003.

Scott Byrom, utilities manager at moneysupermarket.com, said: "It is therefore extremely important for bill payers to address this issue and do whatever they can to reduce their bills going forward."
