Fuel bills 'increase 25% in a decade'

The average cost of a household fuel bill may increase by as much as 25 per cent in the next ten years, it has been stated.

In a new report, Ofgem has stated that factors such as the economic crisis, dependency on gas imports and environmental targets will all drive up the cost of energy bills.

With the average bill currently costing £1,239, this could mean that bills for an average household will be £1,549 in ten years' time.

However, uSwitch.com has responded by announcing that it believes the cost has been underestimated, as it thinks bills could reach £4,733 by 2020.

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.co.uk, said: "When you add the pieces together it's a big wake-up call and raises serious concerns about the ongoing affordability of our energy."

This news follows on from uSwich.com's report that consumers appear to have been trying to ration their energy use this winter to keep their costs down.
