Shoppers purchasing jewellery for Valentine's Day

With one in five people planning on either giving or receiving jewellery this year for Valentine's Day, Halifax has reminded consumers to make sure their gems are insured.

The building society advised shoppers to think about whether or not their policy covers any new jewels and to consider adding them onto home insurance to protect them against loss or theft.

If a claim does need to be made, having a photograph of the item can help as a proof of ownership, in addition to receipts.

Head of underwriting for Halifax Home Insurance David Rochester said: "We recommend anyone with items over £1,500 in value take out additional specified items cover to ensure their most precious possessions are protected both inside and outside the home."

Research carried out by Halifax at the end of last year found that homeowners living in rural areas were being too complacent about their security, which was putting them at risk of burglary.
