Car sales increase during January

The number of people investing in a new car during January increased, an occurrence which one expert described as "surprising".

A spokesperson for EEF, a manufacturers' organisation, admitted that an increase in the number of new cars being bought had not been expected.

He stated that some people had brought their purchases forward towards the end of last year in order to take advantage of the car scrappage scheme.

But this meant that many in the industry had expected there to be a lull, when in fact the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders registrations of new vehicles increased by 29.8 per cent.

It was the seventh consecutive month that car sales had risen, helped by the boost from the scrappage scheme, which accounted for 17.8 per cent of sales.

"Over the last two years we have seen a massive drop in car sales. Sooner or later there was bound to be a rebound," the spokesperson added.
