House purchases increased in January, despite weather

The latest figures from the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) assessments for January have found that the number of people purchasing properties went up, despite the poor weather.

On average, estate agents sold six properties during the month of January, compared to five in December.

The number of people who were registering to buy a property was also on the up, with the average number of people on estate agents' books increasing to 291 from 251 the month before.

President of the NAEA, Gary Smith, said that fears about the health of the mortgage market in 2010 have so far appeared unfounded.

He added that the increase in the number of sales "given the awful weather conditions is quite amazing", but stated that the number of properties coming on to the market would have to increase in order to keep house prices affordable.

The group predicted during January that property prices will remain stable during the first few months of this year.
