Santander: Consumers would keep cash they found

Consumers with Santander have admitted they would keep money they found on the street rather than giving it in to the police.

Of those questioned by the institution, 49 per cent said that if they found £100 on the street and there was nobody around they would keep it, a rise of 13 per cent from the same study in 2008.

Furthermore, 62 per cent stated that they would feel no guilt about holding on to the cash.

Helen Bierton, head of current accounts for Alliance & Leicester, said that as money has become tight for more people, they have become more inclined to keep hold of cash they have found.

However, she points out that many would still hand in any money they found to the authorities or give the cash to charity.

Consumers who experience an unexpected windfall may consider putting their cash into the Santander Reward account. The bank account has recently seen some new additions to its benefits, including Green Flag breakdown cover.
