Cold weather advice for pets from Petplan insurance

Consumers who are worried about their pets during the cold weather have been offered some advice by Petplan.

Freezing temperatures can pose as many problems to pets as they can to people, so Petplan's vet of the year Ben Jones has compiled a list of handy tips to keep your four-legged friends healthy throughout the cold weather.

Keeping your furry friend's paws clear of road grit is important, he said, as it can dry out paws and make them bleed. Dogs may also try to lick off the salt, which can cause stomach problems.

Older animals need extra attention during cold nights, so give them extra blankets to keep out the chill, Mr Jones suggested.

Animal companions are just as likely to lose their footing and slip on ice as people, so he recommended keeping them off icy patches where they can injure themselves.

For those thinking of braving the cold and taking their dog for a walk, Petplan has stated that this is could be a great way of finding your true love, as 54 per cent of respondents find people with a pet more attractive.
