Dads reminded of stay at home rights

The government has laid out the rights fathers have when it comes to taking paternal leave from work.

Research by the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) found that 34 per cent of parents with children aged under five-years-old did not realise that paid leave for fathers was a legal right.

The department reminded parents that they are allowed to request paternity leave if they have a child up to the age of 16, while those expecting a baby need to let their employers know 15 weeks in advance of the birth.

Employment relations minister Lord Young said that the rights for fathers in the workplace were valued by parents and employers alike.

"Our research shows that there are still some dads out there that are not aware of what they are entitled to and therefore risk missing out," he added.

BIS recently said that its Train to Gain scheme was proving successful in helping businesses continue staff development throughout the recession.
