The price comparison website estimates that 33 per cent of domestic customers stay faithful to a brand, but this does not always mean they will receive any discounts.
Gareth Kloet, head of energy at confused.com, said: "Energy suppliers continue to be more willing to compete on price in an attempt to gain new business than they are in retaining and rewarding loyalty."
He added that with out of area pricing coming in as better value than opting for a local supplier, the "age old rule" about shopping around is still as strong as it was ten years ago.
Consumers who are soon to come to the end of a fixed-term energy price plan have been advised by confused.com to look for a better deal instead of switching to the company's suggested tariff.
