Fraudscape "tip of the iceberg" for CIFAS

CIFAS, the fraud prevention service, has released a report which reveals the different types of fraud recorded in 2009.

The 48-page document known as Fraudscape announced that total fraud rose by ten per cent during the 12-month period, although CIFAS chief executive Peter Hurst suggested the figures are just the "tip of the iceberg".

He said: "At a time when every responsible member of society feels the strain of current economic conditions, the findings presented in Fraudscape reveal many of the problems and challenges ahead."

CIFAS figures showed that over 74 per cent of identity fraud took place online in 2009, with this segment as a whole up 32 per cent compared with 2008.

The British Bankers' Association recently outlined the most common types of fraud activity and 12 tips to protect against it, which include keeping virus software up to date, only shopping on secure websites and shielding pin numbers when at cash machines.
