Barclays raises limit for contactless card

Brian Cunnington, head of debit cards for Barclays, said the technology represents the future of everyday financial transaction and noted that interest has grown substantially since its inception two years ago.

Talking about the £15 maximum payment, he said: "The new limit gives customers the flexibility of paying for more transactions quickly, securely and conveniently and will lead to more retailers implementing the technology."

A contactless card allows money to be debited directly from the customer's current account once they have held the card over an electronic reader - available in 20,000 outlets across the country.

The raised limit, however, does not compare with versions used in Europe where such a transit card can be used for payments of €25 (£22.60).
