People continue to invest in Isas, says Barclays

Barbara-Ann King, head of investments at Barclays Stockbrokers, said the over-50s in particular were capitalising on Isas by using their increased tax-free allowance, but generally returns were at an "all-time low".

Ms King believes more people should invest in preparation for the new tax year, with the chance to invest before the increased upper limit is implemented.

She added: "For those investors intending to take advantage of this year's Isa allowance, they should do so before the end of the tax year, or they will lose it."

Almost half of people surveyed about the new limit said they had taken full advantage already whereas only four per cent said had not yet heard about it.

Savers have been advised by Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks to take full benefit as quickly as possible this year since the opportunity will be reduced by Easter's early arrival.
