Energy price cuts 'good for consumers'

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, suggested that it was good news for customers who, until SSE followed BG with price reductions this week, had no real choice in the market.

However, she reminded bill payers that energy prices are much higher now than two years ago and these price cuts would not eventually revert energy costs back to this level.

Ms Robinson commented: "Online energy plans consistently offer the most competitive prices and offering households a real opportunity to take their energy bills back to pre-2008 levels."

SSE increased its prices by 44 per cent (£384) two years ago and the new price cut, effective from March 29th, will take it back to 33 per cent.

Research undertaken by moneysupermarket.com found that wholesale gas prices had fallen 60 per cent since the peak of 2008 and yet despite this energy bills stood at a record high.
