He added: "For too long home insurance has been sold as a standard plain vanilla package that does not take into account how much people's needs and lifestyles differ."
The building society's You Choose facility enables consumers to decide upon the details of their cover from three main options within ten minutes online.
Core cover options include a choice of buildings, contents or a combination of both before branching into a further set of specific categories.
Insurance claim numbers were recorded at 335,000 over the winter months due to the extreme cold weather, which cost companies £650 million, according to the Association of British Insurers.
