Post Office insurance caters for self-styled funerals

Duncan Caesar-Gordon, head of insurance at the organisation, said it was a concern because the deceased often fail to provide sufficient funds to pay for these self-styled affairs and so relatives are left to pay the bill.

He added: "This can be avoided with a simple plan, like Post Office Over-50s Life Cover, costing from just 25p per day."

The survey found that 83 per cent are opting against the standard service, yet 61 per cent of over-55s have still not made plans.

C.P.J Field & Co's list of top-five requests showed horse drawn carriages, wicker and even picture coffins had gained in popularity.

The Co-operative has also seen a new trend of more personalised plans emerge into the market and recently reported that 31 per cent of all sales were for tailor-made services.
