He said: "Using workmen who offer 'mate rates' may look like a cheaper option, but if the job goes wrong it could end up costing a lot more in the long run."
The insurance company found that nearly one in five householders have fallen victim to rogue traders, which have built-up a total cost of £6.8 billion and an estimated £1,592 per unfulfilled contract.
Santander offers a five-star rated unlimited cover for buildings and contents insurance in a house with up to five bedrooms and supplementary costs for temporary accommodation.
Yorkshire Building Society recently launched a flexible insurance deal, which allows customers to choose the type of cover that will suit their requirements.
