Santander reveals growth in personal savings

The findings showed people in the UK put away an average of £219 a month over the last 12 months, which collectively equates to a total of £59.4 billion.

Reza Attar-Zadeh, director of savings and investments for the bank, said it was encouraging there has been a gradual increase in the amount saved, especially with regard to the effects of the recession.

He added: "We know saving can sometimes be difficult but it is never too late to start. Setting aside even a small amount each month can make a huge difference in the long term."

However, investors currently fear an impending tax increase after the general election, according to the Association of Investment Companies (AIC).

Research undertaken by the AIC revealed almost 50 per cent of active investors and 21 per cent of the general public said tax rises were the biggest threat to their financial situation this year.
