Isa apathy 'will cost taxpayers £35m'

Karen Barrett, chief executive of unbiased.co.uk, said it was more important than ever for people to make their savings work to their potential in light of the continuing low interest rates.

She added: "Now is the time to take advantage of tax efficient saving and ensure you are not gifting unnecessary money to the taxman."

Research undertaken by the comparison website showed that 5.9 million people have a savings or deposit account, but if they transferred £4,000 of their money into an Isa they could collectively save £20 million.

Defaqto recently told consumers that if they do not switch to a more competitive Isa they will lose even more of their savings.

Since some Isa providers offer an interest rate of just 0.10 per cent, the financial research company claimed it would be wise to change accounts and earn extra money from savings.
