Aviva issues warning over DIY mishaps

Rob Townend, director of household claims at Aviva, said a bank holiday weekend is the perfect opportunity for home repairs but asked people to be aware of their own abilities.

He added: "Some of the water disasters we see in the home could be down to poor maintenance and poor DIY, so do not attempt to fix leaky pipes […] unless you know what you are doing."

Aviva claims research revealed the top three household problem areas are the washing machine, dishwasher and loose taps.

Furthermore, it advised people not to carry out DIY if they were not fully competent and to seek professional help for complicated pipe work.

Brits have been urged by moneysupermarket.com to switch their home insurance policy regularly, otherwise they will be forced to watch their money go down the drain.

The comparison website found households wasted £131 per year because they chose to renew their cover instead of looking for a cheaper deal.
