Car insurance holders 'must prepare for rising fuel prices'

Will Thomas, head of motor insurance at Confused.com, said a comparison website allows customers the option of valuing one policy against another.

He added: "It has never been more important to make sure that drivers get the best deal … and take advantage of all the benefits available that might help them when it comes to budgeting."

Mr Thomas also provided tips for owners to make having a car less expensive, which included taking an advanced driving course and abandoning any excess weight to cut down on fuel costs.

According to the Association of British Insurers, motorists claimed an estimated £395 million in compensation during the coldest winter in 30 years.

It was also advised by Mr Thomas that car owners should take out breakdown cover in case of emergency in a protracted period of bad weather.
