Halifax insurance issues garden thief warning

Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager for home insurance at the bank, said homeowners can often neglect to check that the outside of their house is safe from thieves.

He added: "But with many people now realising how much value they can add to their property … now is the time to take steps to avoid becoming the next victim."

The bank offers a maximum of £500 for stolen plants and trees and provides cover of up to £2,000 for the contents of outbuildings.

Similarly, Aviva has also announced measures to help customers secure their gardens against opportunistic thieves.

The insurance provider advised homeowners to cover large items sitting outside and clarify what type of items kept in the shed are covered for theft.
