Barclays Isa research reveals widespread 'confusion'

Andy Gray, head of savings for the bank, was concerned that customers did not comprehend what an Isa was and explained they are just as flexible as any other savings product.

He added: "Our new Isa paying 3.1 per cent gives customers total flexibility, as they can have access to their savings as and when they need to."

A Barclays Isa survey revealed that 13 per cent of consumers did not know what an Isa was, while 46 per cent had not used one.

Furthermore, unbisased.co.uk found that 5.9 million adults within the UK had a savings account but did not have an Isa.

The advice website revealed this would create a wastage of £35 million in unnecessary tax payments because these people had not protected their savings.
