Sainsbury's pet insurance covers overweight animals

Lucy Hunter, manager for the branch, stated it was the owner's responsibility to make sure their pets are fed properly because most animals will eat whatever quantity of food they are given.

She said: "The saddest thing about this research is the fact that the pets are not to blame. A lack of exercise and a poor diet, or overeating, is causing our pets' weight to balloon."

An NHS study found that 9.4 per cent of animals were too fat while a further 29 per cent were above the recommended weight.

Sainsbury's Pet Insurance provides a limit of £7,500 for vet fees in accordance with conditions.

A recent decision to review the Dangerous Dogs Act may introduce compulsory measures which could see owners having to take out third party insurance in order to compensate the victims of dog attacks, according to Confused.com.
