Santander Car Insurance predicts customer cutbacks

Miguel Sard, chief executive of the bank's UK sector, said a breakdown is the worst possible outcome when travelling on holiday, but because of the expected transport service strikes the hard shoulders of busy motorways will be congested over the weekend.

According to the firm, a quarter of customers do not have standard breakdown cover costing £115 per year.

He said: "With the cost of motoring spiralling, it is understandable that people look to cut back. But savvy drivers can both cut costs and keep their cover if they can find the right deal."

Santander offers breakdown cover which provides roadside assistance and nationwide recovery, plus a courtesy car subject to terms and conditions.

The Association of British Insurers recently reported that bad winter weather cost insurance providers £650 million in claims, including £395 million to motorists for car accidents on icy roads during December 18th to January 13th.
