Michelle Slade, spokesperson for Moneyfacts.co.uk, welcomed the decision because it will benefit a large proportion of consumers, who until now have been given the choice of more savings than mortgage products.

She added: "While the number of mortgages available to those with just a ten per cent deposit is increasing, it is still a long way off the numbers seen a few years ago."
Lord Mandelson unveiled the £180 million funding programme on behalf of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, revealing that the scheme will come into effect during next year and 2012.
