Churchill pet insurance survey warns against pet poisoning

Claire Foster, spokesperson for the division, advised people to hide chocolate from their pets and to talk to a vet if they noticed any signs of pain.

The confectionary is known to contain a substance called theobromine, which is the main cause one of the main causes of dog poisoning in the UK.

She added: "Make sure you have pet insurance in place to cover any unforeseen vet bills and to give you peace of mind in the event of your pet falling ill."

Churchill offers cover for vet fees for up to £3,000 on a standard policy and £1,500 towards injury costs for emergency cases for a period of 12 months.

The insurance company found that 18 per cent of households regularly feed their dog leftovers from the dinner table, using foods which may pose a threat to their health.

Aside from warning people against feeding dogs chocolate over the bank holiday, Churchill also advises homeowners to make sure they have a home insurance policy in place before attempting any DIY.
