Pensioners need alternative to cheques, says expert

Dot Gibson, general secretary of the National Pensioners Convention (NPC), said the replacement should be something retailers recognise and older generations feel comfortable using.

She added: "Not every pensioner is electronically connected. It is no good having a system that John Lewis will not accept. It has to be one that is already accepted by the commercial sector."

The Payments Council Board recently stated it will close the central cheque clearing in 2018 because the transaction method is in the throes of terminal decline.

It will now attempt to explain to consumers the payment options available and search for new alternatives before the deadline.

According to the organisation, cheque use has steadily fallen since 1990 and in the last five years has dropped by 40 per cent.
