Halifax children's savings account 'funds gaming generation'

Flavia Palacios Umana, savings products senior manager at Halifax, said the duty usually fell on the parents to fund their children's want for high-value gadgetry though the odd gift or weekly pocket money.

She added: "However, it is very pleasing to see that some children are getting into the savings habit at an early age by saving up their pocket money to buy the latest must-have technology items."

According to a Halifax survey, the younger generation spends an average of £383 each per year on entertainment software, of which computer games took over a third of this amount, while mobile phone bills took £104.04 each year.

Financial research firm Defaqto recently revealed that children's savings accounts have not been exempt from the current rate of low interest and the offer of a free gift does not usually come with the highest rate.
