Jennifer Thomas, a spokesperson for the brand's travel insurance division, accepted that everybody is trying to find ways of making a vacation cheaper, but she stressed that not taking out a policy can end up being counter-productive.
"Holidaymakers should protect themselves by ensuring that they have travel insurance in place to cover against any losses should the worst happen," she remarked.
In her view, travellers who decide against covering themselves can end up coming across an unexpected experience and realising that they have made an "expensive mistake".
New research by Direct Line showed that 20 per cent of holidaymakers have had their cameras stolen while abroad.
Prospective customers of the firm may be interested to hear that it recently announced 25 per cent savings on its home insurance policies to celebrate its 25th anniversary.
