Individuals must check their home insurance policies to ensure they are not underinsured, according to moneysupermarket.com, since many people forget about expensive items in the garden.

Julie Owens, head of home insurance at the comparison site, highlighted equipment such as high-tech barbeques and patio heaters as examples of costly products that could invalidate a person's policy if the cover is not sufficient.

She pointed out that gardens can be an easy target for criminals, so it is important to be sure that everything is included on the house's insurance document.

Ms Owens added: "People might have bikes, gym equipment or other possessions that warrant cover so it's important to keep these secure to make sure your insurance remains valid."

In her experience, she has found that it is easy to forget how much items left out in the garden can cost.

Last week, moneysupermarket.com recommended that people check to see if their digital downloads are included in their insurance cover, since this can also be expensive if it is lost.
