Direct Line insurance costs increased by bogus claims

Director of specialist claims at the firm Kate Lotts made her comments after the organisation announced that individuals submitting bogus claims cost each motorist an extra £44 per year on their premium.
She highlighted the so-called 'crash for cash' scams, which see drivers make unnecessary emergency stops in busy areas and then claim money back from the motorist who runs into the back of them.
Ms Lotts remarked: "We will not tolerate fraudsters and always push for the harshest penalties, as we have a duty to protect our customers."
In her experience, fraudulent claims often delay the payment on genuine accidents, but she stated that Direct Line has pinpointed ten areas where the scam-artists are known to operate and will be sharing it with other insurance providers.
A recent survey by the firm found that 69 per cent of motorists want the penalty for talking on the phone while driving to be increased.
