M&S Pet Insurance highlights cost of pets

People considering adopting a pet should first consider whether they can afford to look after the animal, according to Marks&Spencer (M&S) Pet Insurance.

Andrew Ferguson, head of general insurance at the firm, described it as a "financial commitment" for an individual to bring a pet into their home.

"Potential pet owners need to give careful consideration to how any pet adoption might impact on their lifestyles and pockets before deciding to a new animal addition to the family," he stated.

His remarks follow the publication of a series of tips from M&S Pet Insurance, advising people to consider factors such as the age, breed and lifestyle of a furry companion when mulling over an adoption.

Mr Ferguson stressed that looking after a pet can be a very enjoyable experience, but people must consider the costs as well as the benefits.

The firm recently reminded dog owners that their pet can suffer health problems if it eats too much chocolate.
