Zopa banking 'offers consumers an alternative'

Savers looking for an alternative to traditional banks could consider putting their money into Zopa, a service that matches up people who have cash to lend and those that want to borrow, according to an industry expert.

Sara Parkin, founder and director of Forum for the Future, told a recent Green Collar Economy Forum audience that Zopa is now involved with moving around large quantities of money and is helping to "mobilise money".

"It offers an alternative for those who want to get involved but may be a bit reluctant to do it through government or in any other way," explained Ms Parkin.

She described how there is a period where customers must build up trust - much in the same way as a bank works - but from then on individuals are left to lend and borrow between each other.

The forum took place on April 24th and featured several industry leaders such as London CBI chairman Philip Dilley and politicians including Conservative MP John Gummer.
