Halifax advises male homeowners to insure their dens

Male consumers who create expensive den areas in their homes have been warned by Halifax Home Insurance to make sure they inform their insurers.

The company has published research suggesting that seven million UK men now have dens which include luxury items, such as computers, televisions, stereo systems and videogame consoles.

It is estimated that the value of the contents of an average den is £2,400, which could potentially make the area the site of an expensive accident or a costly burglary.

With the trend towards creating dens expected to become more prominent in the lead-up to this summer's World Cup, Halifax Home Insurance senior claims manager Martyn Foulds has recommended that homeowners take precautions.

He said: "Those men who have chosen to spend money on their dream room could see it turn into a costly nightmare if they don't let their insurer know about valuable items held within."

In March, the insurance company also advised that property owners take care over insuring their gardens ahead of the summer, as such spaces are also often targeted by thieves.
