This is the view of Mike Fosberry, president of the Personal Finance Society and nation head of financial services at Smith & Williamson, who pointed out there can be all sorts of "end game" situations that people want to achieve.
He suggested that while one person may wish to build up their pension for when they retire, another may need to pay off a particular asset or debt.
Mr Fosberry remarked: "I think once they understand what their objectives are, there is a fighting chance that somebody can advise them in terms of helping them to achieve their objectives."
Recently, the Insolvency Service released figures showing that the number of personal insolvencies experienced in England and Wales during the first quarter of the year went up by 17.9 per cent compared to the same period of 2009.
