Sales, service and operations executive at Bank of America Europe Card Services Ian Craig explained that technology is transforming the way people can interact with their accounts.
He stated: "Our customers' needs and expectations are changing - they want greater control and choice in managing their finances."
All MBNA credit cards are compatible with this new facility and Mr Craig hailed the simplicity of the system, which offers individuals an alternative method of keeping their account information close to them.
Customers will be able to receive information about the balance, transactions and payments on their account by texting 83838.
Last month, MBNA stated it would refund any foreign exchange currency fees for customers stranded abroad due to the volcanic ash cloud, for transactions carried out on its credit cards.
