Home insurance 'not just about burglary'

Taking out a home insurance policy does not only protect people from having their possessions stolen by a burglar, it is there in case of other emergencies too.

This is the view of Malcolm Tarling, media relations manager at the Association of British Insurers, who claimed the typical cost to a household when they get burgled is about £2,000.

But he noted that purchasing home insurance also covers people against situations such as flooding, which can be just as potent for ruining items.

Mr Tarling remarked: "There are many types of events that could wipe out your possessions. It could take years to replace them and you may never be able to replace them."

His comments were made in response to research by Clydesdale and Yorkshire Bank, which put the annual cost at £200 million for uninsured victims of burglary.

This is based on the statistic that the average claim for such a crime is just over £1,200.
