Tips for buying adequate travel insurance

People heading away on vacation should consider a number of factors before they sign up for a travel insurance policy, according to a sector expert.

Sean Tipton, spokesperson for ABTA, explained the cheapest option is not always the best, since it will usually offer the lowest level of cover.

He highlighted the problems caused by the volcanic ash clouds as evidence that perhaps more comprehensive insurance may be needed.

Mr Tipton made his comments following research by Which? showing that travel agents often sell travellers unsuitable or overpriced cover, with 17 of the 29 agencies tested failing to provide some of the most basic details of policies.

"If a customer does encounter problems that the policy has been mis-sold they can of course take it up with ABTA and the Financial Services Authority," he responded.

In his view, another key point in ensuring that the correct level of cover is bought involves telling insurance companies about any pre-existing medical condition.
