Axa Insurance highlights potential pitfalls of driving overseas

There are several misconceptions that are commonplace among British drivers regarding driving in a foreign country, Axa Insurance has claimed.

Research by the firm showed that 37 per cent of respondents to a survey believe you can overtake on either side of the motorway in Portugal, while 40 per cent think it is legal to jump a red light if nothing is coming towards a junction in Italy.

Axa Insurance director of motor Craig Staniland suggested travellers should take a look at local regulations before getting behind the wheel abroad.

"While some of the misconceptions we have about driving abroad are amusing, there are some very serious misunderstandings that could lead to breaking the law or a serious accident," he remarked.

Recently, the same company revealed under-25s in Great Britain are more than 30 per cent less likely to claim on their insurance than their counterparts in Spain and France.
