Santander mortgages highlights first-time buyer trend

New research by Santander Mortgages has indicated more first-time buyers than ever before are purchasing a home without the aid of a spouse.

It revealed that during the 1980s just ten per cent of consumers bought their first house while they were single, but this figure has reached 37 per cent in the past five years - which is a higher proportion than those who took on a mortgage with a husband or wife.

Phil Cliff, director of mortgages at the company, described how the firm is committed to supporting first-time buyers, with the majority of such customers traditionally being married couples, according to Santander mortgages.

He added: "We have a number of products available to help those looking to purchase a property for the first time, including a three-year fix at 5.99 per cent up to 90 per cent LTV."

Last month, the company unveiled a new two-year tracker mortgage at 2.39 per cent interest for up to 70 per cent LTV properties.
