More financial education needed in schools, says charity

A charity has suggested that the key to encouraging young people to have a responsible attitude towards money is to maintain effective financial education for them.

Chief executive of the Personal Finance Education Group Wendy van den Hende suggested that inroads have been made recently with regards to educating youngsters about cash.

However, in her view, it is the current economic situation more than anything that has led them to change their behaviour.

Ms van den Hende made her remarks after research by Santander showed that the average Briton puts aside £116 per month and the under-35s are leading the way among the age demographics, saving £134.

"If we have a properly coherent, good programme of financial education that all young people can experience at school, then the good behaviours are much more likely to continue," she added.

The good work that has already gone into personal finance education will take a while longer to produce results, explained Ms van den Hende.
