'Crippling' mortgages forcing mums back to work

This is one of the key findings of research carried out by comparison and switching service uSwitch, which discovered that many households cannot get by on one income.

Some 52 per cent of new mothers polled said they returned to work following their maternity leave due to debt and financial considerations.

Families see their net monthly income fall by 34 per cent during the maternity period, with nine per cent claiming they can get by on their partner's salary alone.

Furthermore, 41 per cent of mums end up tumbling into debt before their maternity leave finishes.

Consumer policy director at uSwitch Ann Robinson said government plans to cut child trust funds could add to the worries of new parents.

"Despite women being told that they can ‘have it all' and can choose whether to be a working or stay-at-home mum, the fact is that most have this choice stripped away from them by the financial realities of modern life," she remarked.

Statutory maternity leave can last up to one year, with mums entitled to statutory maternity pay for up to 39 weeks of their absence from work.

However, some employers offer private packages to their staff.
