Confused.com urges homeowners to take out insurance on gardens

Comparison site Confused.com is urging homeowners to insure the contents of their garden.

A survey carried out by the company revealed that Britons spend a considerable amount of money on items such as lawnmowers, greenhouses and patio furniture sets.

Of those polled, almost two-thirds own a BBQ, while 22 per cent have a vegetable patch and two per cent of respondents have a hot tub.

The study revealed that the average garden contains goods worth £825.

Darren Black, head of home insurance at Confused.com, said many people assume these items are covered by their home policy, although this is not always the case.

"Gardens are more prone to theft and damage during the summer and it's likely householders are undervaluing their garden contents in the same way they do their household contents," he added.

Speaking recently, Malcolm Tarling, media relations manager at the Association of British Insurers, said the typical cost to a household when they get burgled is approximately £2,000.
