Aviva Investors highlights retail issue

There is an issue in the retail landscape which needs to be resolved, a spokesperson for Aviva Investors has claimed.

Chris Patterson, fund manager at the firm, suggested that a new model for retail investment is required in order for the market to progress.

He explained that complex planning is required to deliver major department stores and there seems to be continuing demand for floor space from retailers.

"There doesn't seem to be a consensus as to what the new model is and that is something which we desperately need to look at," noted the Aviva Investors representative.

In his view, it is important that - in going forward - the history of retail investment is not disrespected, but that should not stop progress in the sector.

These comments follow a report published by PayPal, which indicated that online retail spending is poised to grow by more than 36 per cent over the next 18 months.
