Virgin Money Giving calls for more online charity payments

Consumers should consider making more payments to charities online, a representative from Virgin Money Giving has suggested.

Grant Bather explained that paying money to charitable organisations on the internet makes the process of adding Gift Aid much easier.

In his view, this is especially important following remarks by minister for civil society Nick Hurd, who said he wants to cut out bureaucracy in the charity sector and believes it is unlikely any increase in Gift Aid rates is forthcoming.

"By donating online, donors can easily acknowledge their Gift Aid eligibility and charities can receive payments quickly and securely," commented Mr Bather.

Virgin Money Giving revealed that 86 per cent of donations submitted with the organisation claim Gift Aid.

Mr Bather stated that currently just two per cent of donations in the UK are processed online.

Last month, Virgin Money announced that it is changing to a positive payment hierarchy for its credit card accounts from September.
