Post Office Travel Money says people are losing out in airports

Holidaymakers could lose a significant amount of money by changing their cash at an airport, according to Post Office Travel Money.

Head of the organisation Sarah Munro explained that the bureau de change branches in such travel hubs tend to charge more for currency exchange transactions than other places.

She revealed that Post Office Travel Money carried out research to find out how much cash is being lost by people heading abroad and discovered that the total annual figure is more than £28 million.

"Families changing £286 into euros at the airport face losing over £16 – enough to buy a round of drinks and eight ice creams in Portugal, summer 2010's best value destination," noted Ms Munro.

The firm also advised travellers that the strength of the pound against the euro reached a 20-month high this week.

Earlier this year, the company urged people to check their travel insurance documents if they believe they may be affected by some form of industrial action this summer.
