Commercial analyst at the website Alex Higgs noted that it is not just the money charged for missing payment deadlines that consumers should worry about, since they may also lead to introductory deals being taken away.
He said: "Collectively we are wasting millions of pounds each year on these charges, money which would be better spent elsewhere in these tough financial times."
Research by Confused.com credit cards showed that £150 million is spent each year by UK consumers on late payment charges, with 57 per cent of account holders failing to set up a direct debit.
Last week, the firm noted that energy providers are raising their prices, but it suggested there are still competitive deals to be found on the market.
