Aviva pensions hails 'great news'

The decision to scrap the default retirement age is really positive news for the majority of older workers, a representative from Aviva pensions has noted.

Head of 'at retirement' at the company Darren Dicks stated that the firm is delighted with this government policy change, since it offers added choice for employees.

He explained that Aviva pensions research shows that 68 per cent of over-55s would like to work past the current retirement age, so it is great news for them.

"Keeping minds active, staying out from under their partner's feet and enjoying social interaction appear to be real benefits that are pushing people to keep working," said Mr Dicks.

In his view, there are significant emotional and intellectual benefits of employment that are often overlooked in favour of viewing retirement as just a financial change.

Legal & General also commented on the decision to scrap the default retirement age, suggesting that it is a policy that "makes sense".
