Citizens Advice welfare applauds government

The decision to hold a government consultation regarding the simplification of the tax and benefits system has been supported by a Citizens Advice welfare expert.

Director of public policy Teresa Perchard welcomed the open nature of the process and stressed that the organisation will inform the state about the feedback Citizens Advice welfare has received regarding such matters.

She explained that many people do not even claim benefits they are entitled to because of the complexity of the system, which makes this review of the procedure all the more important in her eyes.

"We especially welcome proposals which could allow much greater flexibility for individuals to work a small number of hours a week without losing benefits," said Ms Perchard.

Secretary of state for work and pensions Iain Duncan Smith unveiled the 21st Century Welfare consultation on July 30th, which proposes to make the tax system simpler and help people to keep more of their earnings.
